As I've been having my hair coloured professionally for well over a year now I thought it might be a good time to get my hand back in to the DIY hair colour market, and these new L'Oreal Preference Wild Ombres Dip Dye Hair Kit were the perfect opportunity!!
If my hair was its natural colour I would have chosen Ombre No 1 but as I have quite a bit of colour and highlights, I opted for Ombre No 2. And I was very pleased with the results!

It's a really straightforward kit that contains everything you need to get the perfect 'at home' dip dye or ombre (whatever you prefer to call it!).
You'll need to allow about an hour to get it done although the longest you are advised to leave the product on the hair is 45 minutes.
You mix everything together, part your hair into two bunches and bring it over your shoulders and then brush on the mixed products on to the hair you want to lighten and leave for between 25 and 45 minutes, checking half way. As it takes quite a lot to lift my hair, I left it on for the full 45 minutes. Easy!
You then wash is out with the shampoo provided and you're done! I did some extra conditioning with L'Oreal's Hair Expertise Eversleek Absolute Smooth Intense Mask and I was good to go.
Here are some after shots. It looks different depending on the amount of natural light and flash so I thought I'd show you a few:

Yeah! I just thought I'd throw Alesha Dixon in there!!
I'm really happy with it. I think that I want to go a bit lighter still right at the ends, so I am going to give my hair lots of TLC for a week or too, then go in on the very ends with Ombre No 3 to create even more contrast in the hair. Exciting!! I shall blog about that as soon as I've done it, so stay tuned!!
The L'Oreal Preference Wild Ombres Dip Dye Hair Kit is £6.99 - although currently on an intro price of £5.99 at Superdrug and on a 3 for 2 Mix and Match offer at Boots.
Considering how much I would be charged to have this done professionally (and even not considering that really!!) it is a TOTAL BARGAIN!!

Great blog, and by the way, you look stunning in the pictures! Your hair came out really well, how do you plan on maintaining the ombre look? :)
ReplyDeleteI think the best thing about onbre is that it doesn't take much maintaining!! xxx
DeleteThat's true! We will definitely give this hair style a try! Have you seen any celebrities with this hairstyle whom you think look great with it?

DeleteMy hair is dyed with both permanent and non- permanent dyes , would the dip dye come out ginger ?
DeleteYes I think there's a chance it could go ginger if there's dye in it

ReplyDeleteI love this, looks SO amazing on you! But I have blonde hair so I caaan't :( very sad haha x
ReplyDeleteAmber, you can do it on your blonde hair! This ombré kit is for dark hair, there's other ombré kits for different types of bases of hair colour, you should try ombré kit no.3! xx
ReplyDeleteLove this! I had a biiiiiig hair tragedy with L'Oreal products and kinda lost faith in them, but this is really very tempting - I may darken my hair and try the second kit. You look gorgeous :)

Heyy just wanted to ask is l'oreal wild ombre permanent?Because my hair is dark brown and i am scared that it will go Ginger after a couple of weeks and it will never go back to my natural colour!! P.s. love the hair!!! :)
ReplyDeleteLili x
Hello!
DeleteHi!
Yes it is permanent. If your hair is dark it may go through the the ginger stage as you actually colour it - you may need to leave it on for the maximum time, keep checking the colour throughout.
There is always an orange stage as dark hair lightens - you have to make sure you leave the bleach on long enough to lighten up.
Once you have done it, the natural colour will not return - it is the same as bleaching your hair.
I hope that helps!

Thank you for posting this, it's so helpful! just wondering how you got that graduation from dark to light. I have seen some videos where people have done the tips first and then gone further up rather than do it all at once. Is this what you did?
ReplyDeleteThanks!

I did mine all in one go but I think that my ends were slightly lighter anyway. Most people find that I think

what colour do i choose . i have brown hair but i want a light blond at the bottom, i want a strong dip dye not so much gradual
ReplyDeletejust wondering what one should i pick? i have brown hair but i want a light blond colour at the ends. I think the ombre colours are sectioned so that it is more gradual so does that mean 3 goes the lightest ?
ReplyDeleteChoose the one for Brown hair and leave it on for the maximum time.
DeleteEach pack takes into account your hair colour and the effect will be more dramatic the longer you leave the product on

hi, i was just wondering, did you find that it ran at all? because i've heard a few bad things about that. also, my hair isn't really the right colour to be ombre-d right now, so would it still work if i dyed my hair brownish then ombre-d it? i hope i'm making sense aha. x
ReplyDeleteI didn't find that it ran at all - but I wore an old t-shirt when I did it.
DeleteWhat colour is it now? Perhaps you need to colour just the top part to get the ombre effect?

hi used the dip look kit yesterday and it has gone red/orange and in some places blond, should I try puting it on again to even it up ?
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't do it again so soon. Have you ever tried a silver shampoo. Really good for toning down orange.

Hi Ree,
ReplyDeleteI love the outcome of the ombre kit.
Can you tell me how many packages you used?
I have long & thick hair and usually I use 2 packages with normal dyeing.
My roots are outgrown also so do I need to fix this first or can I use this kit also for that. Or is it for the bottom part only?
Hope you can help me out :)
Hi there
DeleteI just used 1 pack - in the past when I have died my whole hair I have used 2.
This product is just for the ends of the hair.
Hope this is helpful

I'd be skeptical of trying at-home ombre, but this turned out good. Looks professional done!
ReplyDeleteMy hair is black, would it still working mine at all! I'm so scared of tying it x
ReplyDeleteHi, my hair is black, would it work on black hair if I leave it on for the full time. I'm so scared to try it in case it goes wrong x
ReplyDeleteHello!!
DeleteI am not an expert at all but I do know that the darker your hair is, the hard it is to lift and the more likely it is that it will go a bit ginger. It may take a few goes, depending on what colour you want it to go.
I have seen quite a few nice ombres with gingery ends.
Why not go for a consultation at a hairdresser and see what they say? If it sounds promising you might fancy giving it a go at home.
Hope this is helpful

Hello, if I put this product on for the whole 45mins would it come out darker than if I lesve it on for less time? because I would like a more blonde-brown than a ginger colour. Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi there
DeleteThe longer you leave it on the lighter the hair will be - it is just bleach really.
Hope this helps

I've recently bleached my black hair only at the ends so now it's Ginger and blonde in places, if I use the ombre will it go more Ginger? And will it for the black bits? BTW your hair looks amazing:)

ReplyDeleteI recently bleached my black hair at the ends, now they are a Gingery blonde colour if i use ombre will it go blonde or more Ginger? And will it die the black parts?
ReplyDeleteThis is tricky! I think it can go quite ginger if you have recently coloured your hair and then try to ombre. You may need to wait a while or use a product to strip the dye out first.

Hi this looks really good. So did you just follow the instructions put it all on and leave it. Not put some on and then more later?

Can you use this on red hair? Like I dyed my hair with L'Oreal high color red,and I want the blonde at the ends so much
ReplyDeleteCan you use this product on red hair? I dyed my hair with L'Oreal high color red like 2 months ago.
ReplyDeleteHi Shelly
DeleteI am not 100% sure. I think there's a strong possibility that you may end up with gingers ends.
You could always go into a salon and ask for a free consultation and see what they say about it and go from there?

First off your color looks gorgeous second i have been thinking about trying the ombre look but i have just dyed my hair a week ago so i am going to wait until the first weekend of april to try it but i am not sure whcih color to use since i have color trated hair which right now is a medium auburn reddish brown bu my natural color is meduim brown can i use this and if so which color?
ReplyDeleteYes definitely make sure you give your hair a while before you colour it again.
ReplyDeleteI'd probably go for No 2 but you have to be prepared that your hair may go a bit ginger from the other dye
Ree

well now i am at the 2 week mark since i dyed my hair and as always my hair becomes lighter with every shampoo so now my color is more a light reddish brown with a tinge of light golden brown depending on the light so if keep on shampooing until when i want to ye my hair will it lessen the ginger?not that i have a problem with having red hair but something in the light reddish realm or even the color you have right now would be perfect sorry for the long question i just want to be sure before i do this.
ReplyDeleteI did my daughters hair yesterday and it went a bit ginger too you could hardly tell at all, I didn't know if to try another box or not to see if it would go lighter her hair is really thick? What do you think?
ReplyDeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteSo the result wasn't very noticeable? How long did you leave it on for?
I wouldn't use another kit yet as the bleach is damaging. Give it at least a month and make sure you use some deep conditioners before colouring again.
Wish I was more expert at this!!

Hi my hair is like between a dark blonde very light brown ..i really like the look of the med to light brown ombre kit( i believe the first one)it seems the best effect more dramatic to me ..if I wanted to darken my hair should I dye my whole head brown then ,do it with the ombre kit...(not a very experienced hair dyer)
ReplyDeleteHi..:)..my hair is naturally a dark blonde (at times even looks light brown) ...i really like the look the #2 kit med to light brown gives...if I wanted to darken my hair can I dye my whole head brown then use the ombre kit(or is that too much on my hair) I want a really dramatic effect and I always wanted to try brown hair(just havent tried due to me being a little scared of dying it brown and it not looking right)

ReplyDeleteHi there!
DeleteI am not really sure about this. I wouldn't recommend dying it and then using the kit as you will struggle to lighten newly dyed hair. Perhaps you need to just darken the top parts and leave the ends natural for the effect.
You should go into a salon for a free consultation and see what they say. You don't have to get it done there.
