The Most Gorgeous 50 Year Old in the World!

Hayden Williams
This year is Barbie’s 50th birthday. And she still doesn’t look a day over 21!
Barbie is a true fashion icon and has been the obsession of small girls, some boys and Fashionistas alike for as long as I can remember.
As a child, Barbie represented everything I wanted from life. A girl with freckles and auburn hair, I wanted to be blonde and beautiful and have a wardrobe full of cute clothes and killer heels. When I discovered the brown haired Barbie, I returned to a state of hair colour contentment and continued to dream of her perfect life with the shoes and the clothes to match.
In the old days, Woolworths, (God rest its soul) provided the platform for this fantasy and dreaming. There, I would browse all of the latest Barbie and her outfits, tightly clutching my purse full of the coins I had been determinedly saving.
It was real dream stuff. Barbie’s clothes were nothing like the clothes I had. Her shoes had heels and pointy toes. Mine had clumsy T-bars and were from Clarks.
And so now that I am all grown up and I can choose the kind of clothes and shoes that I want, I find it amazing, scary and beautifully inspiring that gorgeous Barbie is 50. And still such an icon of glamour, style and sophistication.
I know that Barbie has come under fire for being ‘too perfect’ and delivering an image to mere mortals that is largely unachievable. But for me, Barbie represents escapism and fantasy and I won’t let the cynics take that away from me.
An awe inspiring figure; I even know a Twitter friend that owns Barbie’s entire Louboutin collection. Look at these amazing photographs.

The owner of this collection wrote,
“I remember when I was a little girl, I wondered how come Barbie’s shoes looked all the same, only varying in color. For such a fashionist, she seemed not to pay attention to her shoes that much…I guess that evolved and she ventured into more adventurous pairs”.
She continues,
“I started collecting these adorable mini pairs last year and I’m amazed at the details and how they come up with of-the-moment styles.
I’m sure Barbie is having the time of her life now, the way I am with my life-size collection.”
Another Twitter friend, Hayden Williams, an inspring Fashion Designer/Illustrator, who you may have read about in a previous post I have written, has found his own inspiration in Barbie. The top image is his take on the 1950s Barbie.
Hayden, who is an amazing talent, has even based some of his designs on Barbie’s iconic status.

I find Hayden’s take on Barbie in 2010 really exciting. In Hayden’s words,
“Tropical colours that look good enough to eat! Inspired by the swinging 60s and glamourous Bond girls. Barbie never looked so good!”
I want those clothes. I want those shoes. I want that hair! And you really must check out Hayden’s blog or his facebook page. His drawings are stunning and have inspired me to write a post or two!
And as for Barbie, she continues to impress and amaze. I know it’s not just me! Happy Birthday Barbie. Here’s to another 50 years!
Have a look at this gorgeous Barbie video from Crane TV.
What are your memories of Barbie? Do you still love her in the present? Or were you in Sindy’s camp!?!
Can’t wait to here from you

Great post, so well said. Barbie really is an icon and, even we can’t emulate her, we can be inspired by her fashion sense. That shoe collection looks adorable. 🙂

lol totally agree that Barbie represents fantasy. My Barbies were my world. For the longest time I didn’t have a Barbie house, so every shelf and cupboard in my room turned into Barbie apartment 🙂

Love the illustrations and the shoes but I didn’t have Barbie or Sindy – it was Mary Quant’s Daisy for me.

I love those drawings. I think Barbie might need more attitude in 2010 as Hayden’s drawings depict!

Thanks for sharing and you are right about Twitter. It has become more crucial than any blog feed or news RSS for me.
