Spring is in the air! The days are getting longer, blossom is appearing on the trees and I have an unbelievable urge to spring clean my whole life. But to begin with, I’m starting with my makeup collection. I’ve got drawers and drawers full of the stuff, some of which I use on a daily basis, some of which I use every few months and some things I’m saving for ‘best’ – whenever that is.
But did you know that makeup expires? If you’re anything like me then it’s probably time you had a clear out and got rid of all the out of date products. After all it is the time for spring cleaning -what better place to start than with our makeup collections? Who wants to apply out of date foundation to their face and risk a breakout of spots, or use out of date mascara and eyeliner and risk an eye infection? Not me!
So how long should you keep makeup for?
- Mascara – 3 months
- Foundation – one year
- Concealer – 12 -18 months
- Powder – 18 months
- Blusher/Bronzer – 18 months
- Cream blush – 12 to 18 months
- Eye shadow – 18 months
- Eyeliner – 18 months
- Liquid eyeliner – 6 months
- Lipstick/lip gloss – 18 months
- Lip liner – one year
- Nail polish – one year
I’ve just had a quick look through my makeup collection and I’m pretty sure I could throw away at least a third of it because it’s out of date. It’s a shame but hopefully it’ll force me to stop being so wasteful and either wear more of the makeup I own or give away more of the makeup I don’t use to friends and family who will make better use of the products.
Are you going to join me for spring clean of your makeup collection?
