A good waterproof mascara is a complete necessity. We all know the effort that goes into creating our makeup look, and dealing with running, smudged mascara really isn’t on our to-do lists!
Your mascara can be threatened by plenty of things in your day-to-day life. Whether you’re going swimming, watching an emotional film, commuting in torrential rain or even just experiencing high humidity, you can find your lashes under threat at every turn. That’s why I always like to make sure I have a reliable, waterproof mascara.
But with so many choices available, finding a dependable mascara that can stand up against life’s twists and turns can be hard, especially when you’re on a budget. So, I’ve picked out some of the best mascaras that can leave your lashes looking luscious while providing around the clock, all-weather protection.
Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara
My top choice is this fantastic, cheekily named mascara from Too Faced. Even with the simple packaging, the Better than Sex Waterproof Mascara has nailed it, cleverly covering the tube with detailed water droplets.
The product itself enhances lashes, giving them a thick and volumised look, achieved with an intense black colour and hourglass-shaped brush. It can feel a bit heavier than your normal mascara, but it really stands up against water. With a splash test, my lashes stayed well in place and I experienced no smudging or flaking – perfect!Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara details
L’Oreal Paris Mega Volume Miss Hippie Mascara
The Mega Volume Miss Hippie product from L’Oreal Paris is so lovely to apply and really enhances every lash. This adds volume and lengthens too, giving a dramatic look that doesn’t go too over the top.
You can also rely on it being waterproof as when faced with water, it holds tight. And, despite the high street price, it doesn’t skimp on reliability, making it both affordable and dependable.
Maybelline Falsies Push Up Drama Waterproof Mascara
I was a huge fan of the original, so when I saw there were a Falsies Push Up Drama Waterproof mascara from Maybelline, I was excited to try it. It was still all about curling and lifting lashes, giving both upper- and under-eye lashes extra volume, but the added waterproof properties made it even more special.
The 45-degree brush also works really well to give a fanned-out finish. The rich and creamy formulation was very much focused on plumping lashes and doesn’t even budge when wet. It’s completely smudges and transfer-proof, making it another great, affordable choice!
Dolce and Gabbana Passioneyes Waterproof Mascara
Formulated to resist water, tears, humidity and hot weather, the Passioneyes Waterproof mascara by Dolce and Gabbana really sounds like the real deal. The mascara is part of an amazing collection that promises no smudges across the board, including eyeshadows and liners.
The mascara delivers dramatic volume but still gives a very feminine curl. It also feels lightweight on lashes, separating them to give a more natural touch that avoids clumping. This one lasts really well too, not smudging or flaking when it gets damp or wet. It’s slightly more expensive than the other choices on this list, but it really is worth it!
Bourjois Volume Reveal Mascara
Borjois have always created great mascaras, and the Volume Reveal is no exception. Starting with the bottle, it comes with a 3x zoom mirror that helps with application, allowing you to see all of your lashes and focus on them with the volumising mascara.
In terms of the actual mascara, the soft texture succeeds in targeting even the shortest lashes and the double row of bristles helps to give full lash coverage. This is an ideal choice for those who want long eyelashes that wow while keeping them safe from smudging in water.
Glossier Lash Slick Mascara
Glossier’s everyday range is not only affordable but masters the natural look. The Lash Slick mascara, in particular, is fantastic, creating a look that curls, sculpts and lengthens your lashes, giving a full look even if you don’t have naturally thick lashes.
It doesn’t clump lashes, but instead offers a feathery pretty look that can still get you noticed. The brush is tapered with tiered bristles to separate and enhance every lash, and the vegan biotin is key for conditioning and strengthening lashes.
However, the mascara is only water-resistant. It can stand up to a moderate level of water but can be beaten by warm water so definitely not one to go swimming in!
Removing Waterproof Mascara
While all of these mascaras are great, it is important to remember to take them off properly. As waterproof mascaras, they are designed to withstand almost everything, so you need to find a good makeup remover.
I’d recommend a gentle eye makeup remover that is hypoallergenic to ensure you avoid irritation. You can find good oil-based removers work really well too as the oils break down waterproof properties in the mascara.
Something like this Glossier Milky Oil Waterproof Makeup Remover is ideal. The product is a mix between micellar water and oil cleanser, removing makeup gently but effectively! And, despite the oil, it doesn’t leave skin feeling greasy or sticky but instead leaves skin feeling soft and fresh. It also has comfrey root extract and pro-vitamin B5 that work to condition skin.
To remove, put some remover on a clean pad and wipe away from the lid towards the tips of your lashes. Always remove the mascara carefully to ensure you don’t pull your lashes off. Remember to do it before going to sleep – dried up mascara pieces can end up in your eye if not!
All in all, all of these mascaras can all make your lashes look beautiful while protecting your makeup look from the threat of water-related smudging! Some are more expensive than others, but they all have good staying power. Just be sure you remove them safely, so you keep your lashes happy and healthy.
